The book At the Gate of the East: English Travelers on Bosnia and Herzegovina from the 16th to the 20th Century by Omer Hadžiselimović (1946–2016) was published in Sarajevo in 1989 as part of the legendary Cultural Heritage series. Its English edition appeared in 2001 (East European Monographs / Columbia University Press).

The period between the two editions was marked by wars and the disintegration of Yugoslavia. Readers will inevitably notice the almost prophetic observations and ominous predictions of future events found in the writings of these long-ago British travelers.

The book has been difficult to obtain, and with this edition—now freely available in PDF format on our website—we aim to bring it back to the public. Alongside editorial revisions, we also include higher-quality reproductions of historical illustrations taken from the accounts of British travelers.
